The addage "every performance is an audition" means you're being judged for re-hire every time you perform.
A professional musician is often judged by what they present in-person, rather than on-paper. Can they sing? Can they play? Are they reliable to show up when scheduled and do a good job? Technology has stepped in on this regard: audio/video samples, as with Youtube links, are used to vet potential candidates. Personal references that vouch for your quality are another key.
Formal educational credentials are not always required for employment. Formal education is important to learning the profession. Teaching posts can, also, be limited by rules that require a Bachelor's Degree.
